The following page describes the rehabilitation of a Big Scrub Rainforest remnant on the Logan's property.

Some members of the Big Scrub Rainforest Landcare Group (BSRLG) own properties where existing remnants of Big Scrub rainforest occur.

Many members have undertaken rainforest plantings where the Big Scrub Rainforest occurred before it was cleared for agriculture in the 19th century.

The Big Scrub remnant 18 years ago where cattle were free to roam.
The same remnant that has been fenced from cattle and rehabilitated for 18 years. Many of the trees have regenerated, some plantings occurred on the edge.

Below (left) is the buttressed root of a Blue Quandong (Elaeocarpus grandis) which was planted in an open area 18 years ago on the Logan's property (the size of the seedling on the far right). The two middle pictures also show this same tree.

Plantings were undertaken on cleared land. The plantings below are three years old.

The small picture in the corner is of the cleared area before planting.

The same plantings below at six years.

This area is newly cleared where Lantana camara (weed species) occurred.

The lantana was cut and crushed and the regrowth controlled. The cages are to prevent new trees from wallaby attack.

When the trees are first planted many weeds grow around the trees. When a canopy forms, the area underneath the trees is shaded and less weed species grow.

The weed on the left (top) is mistflower (Ageratina riparia). The picture above left (bottom) shows old man's beard grass, a native grass (Oplismenus sp.). This native grass will sometimes grow in place of the mistflower in shaded areas if the mistflower is removed.

Care must be taken when weeding to avoid removing any native seedlings that have regenerated.

The picture on the below shows an established rainforest understorey.
